Aug. 12, 1987: Walter Thurmond (age 27), a former Oregon Ducks secondary standout who earned a Super Bowl ring last season with the Seattle Seahawks.

A crowd of 21,228 at Multnomah Stadium sees former Oregon Ducks quarterback Bob Berry lead coach Norm Van Brocklin’s Minnesota Vikings to a 36-5 NFL exhibition victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Berry’s teammates include receiver Lance Rentzel, center Mick Tingelhoff and defensive linemen Carl Eller and Jim Marshall. Berry completes 14 of 26 passes for two touchdowns and 246 of the Vikes’ 333 offensive yards. Van Brocklin also has success before the game, as the Dutchman catches a 22-pound salmon.
