A win that had lots back-and-forth scoring, some key defensive stands and a last-minute stop to preserve the opening-night triumph for the home team.

The Portland Thunder pulled off a 42-37 Arena Football League victory over the Los Angeles KISS before 7,194 Friday night at Moda Center.

Thunder quarterback Kyle Rowley passed for five touchdowns -- three to Jamar Howard, who went tumbling over the barrier for one spectacular TD grab.

The Portland defense did the rest, with its pass rush repeatedly putting the heat on KISS QB Adrian McPherson, who tossed for four scores but was denied on L.A.'s final possession.
