TRIBUNE PHOTO: JAIME VALDEZ - The sun is about to set at Walker Stadium on Friday as the Portland Pickles play their first home game. Scenes from the home opener Friday night at Walker Stadium, where the Portland Pickles introduced themselves to their new city with a game against the Marysville Gold Sox.

The clubs are part of the new, six-team Great West League, which features college players competing in a 60-game regular season over two-plus months, using wood bats.

Mayor Charlie Hales and others tossed out the first ceremonial pitches before a sellout crowd of about 1,700 at the renovated civic stadium in Lents Park.

The Pickles and Gold Sox then battled back and forth -- going to the 10th inning before Marysville pulled out an 8-6 victory.

The series continues Saturday and Sunday with games at Walker Stadium. Start times are 7 p.m. and 5 p.m.
