BLAZERS

Portland will open a seven-game NBA preseason on Monday, Oct. 3, facing the Utah Jazz at Moda Center.

The Blazers will be at home for two other exhibition games — versus the Phoenix Suns on Friday, Oct. 7, and against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday, Oct. 16.

The Utah and Phoenix games start at 7 p.m. The Denver game starts at 6 p.m.

Portland’s other four preseason games will be away.

The Blazers will take on the Los Angeles Lakers at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Staples Center.

On Oct. 13, the Blazers and L.A. Clippers will play at Staples at 7:30 p.m.

Portland’s final two tuneup games will be on the road, as well.

The Blazers and Utah will meet at Salt Lake City, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Portland will visit the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California for a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday, Oct. 21.

TIMBERS

The Portland Timbers have made a move to bolster their injury-riddled defense, signing central defender Steven Taylor.

He comes from Newcastle United, where he played for 13 seasons and in 260 games.

The 30-year-old scored 12 goals in 12 years and 190 appearances in the English Premier League.

Taylor is 6-2, 200 pounds.

He was born in Greenwich, London, England and will take an international spot on the Portland roster.

COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER

Former Pilots center back Logan Emory is back with the program as an assistant coach under new head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt.

Emory, who retired from pro soccer iin 2014, had been coaching in Idaho. The Boise native played for UP from 2006-09, and was on the Porltand team that made it to the NCAA quarterfinals his senior year.

GREYWOLVES

George Mendazona and Derek Chapman hit RBI doubles in the bottom of the ninth inning as Bend rallied to beat Gresham 10-9 in West Coast League baseball play at Bend.

Konnor Zickefoose had two hits and three RBIs for Gresham (24-24). Chapman had three hits, including a triple and home run, and drove in four runs for Bend (20-31); Jared Gonzales had three hits, including a homer, and three RBIs. The Elks had 15 hits.
