Heat takes early lead, keeps it, and evens Great West League baseball series, which will wind up on Sunday

The Chico Heat evened their series with the visiting Pickles on Saturday night, winning 5-3.

The three-game concludes at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Portland will hustle back to Walker Stadium to open a six-game, Great West League homestand at 7 p.m. Monday against the expansion Yuba City Bears.

Chico got to Portland's Andrew Eppenbach, who was making his first start of 2017, for three runs on one hit, five walks and one hit batter in two-thirds of an inning.

The Pickles pulled to within 3-2 in the fourth on an RBI double from Daniel Lopez and a run-scoring from Aidan Malm.

Chico got single runs in the fourth and sixth for a 5-2 advantage.

Still down by three, the Pickles got one back in the ninth when leadoff man Daniel Lopez hit a home run.

But the Heat got the next three batters in order.

Chico led Portland in hits, 7-6.

Elsewhere in the GWL on Saturday, the host Medford Rogues beat the Lincoln Potters, 9-3, and the Maryvsille Gold Sox defeated the Yuba City Bears, 9-2.
