PREPS: All-Stars from Portland shine in postseason games
In two of the state's biggest postseason summer events for high school athletes, several Portland players stood out.
The 70th North vs. South all-star football game — which began as the Shrine Game and now is the Les Schwab Tire Bowls — took place June 24 at Hillsboro Stadium.
And the Daimier Oregon All-Star Baseball Series, initially known as the State-Metro All-Star Series, returned to Goss Stadium in Corvallis.
In football, the South won, 10-7.
In baseball, the South won 2 games to 1. The South dropped the opener, 11-5, then won 9-5 and 12-9.
Jefferson High's Terrell "Rayray" West was named the North's Back of the Game in football. He made eight tackles, six solo.
The North finished with 229 yards of offense; the South had 228. Each team had two turnovers in 90-degree-plus temperatures.
At Oregon State, Grant's Sawyer Medlin was voted the North's Most Oustanding Pitcher.
Two Lincoln players also contributed significantly for the North. Brandon Leitgeb was 3 for 9 with a double and four RBIs in the three games. Baxter Halligan threw two innings of shutout relief in Sunday's first game. Halligan held the South to one hit and left with a 5-2 lead.
