Los Angeles had led 3-0 before a couple Mariners homers, then closer's control goes awry and Trout makes him pay

TROUTRewind to April 9, and Seattle closer Edwin Diaz suffered through arguably his worst outing. He couldn't hold the Mariners' lead in the bottom of the ninth inning at the Los Angeles Angels, who rallied for seven runs to win 10-9.

Cliff Pennington hit an RBI single off Diaz, who gave up three hits and three runs and walked two.

But, on Thursday, Diaz suffered through yet another forgettable game.

The Mariners rallied to tie on Jean Segura and Nelson Cruz homers, but Diaz walked three hitters and then Mike Trout cleared the bases with a double as L.A. won 6-3 at Safeco Field.

To make matters worse, the Mariners, who closed in on the American League's second wild-card berth, lost starting pitcher James Paxton, who left in the seventh inning with a left pectoral strain.

It was a tough loss for the Mariners (59-57), who nearly moved to four games over .500 for the first time after winning four of the previous five games.

The Angels (58-58) led 3-0 through seven innings. C.J. Cron hit a solo homer off Paxton in the second inning and Andrelton Simmons a two-homer off Paxton in the fourth.

Tyler Skaggs limited the Mariners to five hits through 6 1/3 innings.

In the bottom of the eighth inning off reliever Bud Norris, Segura hit a solo homer and Robinson Cano doubled and scored when Cruz hit a two-run homer to tie the game.

Diaz walked Pennington and Kole Calhoun to start the bottom of the ninth inning. Later, with two outs and Trout on deck, Diaz walked Cameron Maybin. So, Trout stepped the plate and stroked a double to left field, clearing the bases.

The Mariners went quiety against Cam Bedrosian in the bottom of the inning.

Paxton, who has become the ace with Felix Hernandez injured and struggling (and other starters also out), had won seven consecutive decisions.

The teams play again at 7 p.m. Friday, with Marco Gonzales (0-0, 11.25) pitching for Seattle opposite Ricky Nolasco (5-12, 5.09).
