Winterhawks win shootout
The Portland Winterhawks beat the Spokane Chiefs 6-5 in a shootout on Thursday in preseason Western Hockey League action at Kennewick, Washington.
Ilijah Colina scored the only goal of the shootout after the Winterhawks rallied from a 5-3 deficit to force the game into overtime.
Portland is 2-2 in preseason play, with both wins coming over Spokane. The Winterhawks face Kootenay at 11 a.m. on Friday in Kennewick.
Jake Gricius had a goal and two assists and Ty Kolle had a goal and one assist for Portland. Bronson Sharp, Brad Ginnell and Jaydon Dureau also scored for the Winterhawks.
Gricius, Sharp and Dureau scored as Portland built a 3-0 lead after one period.
Spokane scored the next five goals and led 5-3 when Tyson Feist scored with 5:44 left in the third period. Kolle scored with assists from Gricius and Henri Jokiharju with 2:40 remaining.
With 1:44 left, Ginnell tied it off assists from Gricius and Clay Hanus.
Goalie Shane Farkas stopped 24 of 29 Spokane shots, including four in overtime and 13 of 14 in the third period.
The Hawks outshot the Chiefs 34-29. Portland was 0 for 7 on the power play, Spokane 3 of 9.
The Winterhawks are sending 11 players to National Hockey League rookie tournaments and/or training camps. Several have already departed.
