WEDNESDAY COLLEGE RESULTS/Penalty kick in second OT lifts Concordia women to soccer victory


Portland State 3, PORTLAND 0

The Vikings beat the Pilots 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 on the first day of the Nike Invitational at Chiles Center.

PSU out-hit UP, .197-.110.PORTLAND STATE WINS

Sophomore Caitlin Bettenay led the Viks with 11 kills. Junior Katy Wilson and freshman Parker Webb each had 10. Senior Erin Clark posted 32 assists, and senior Tasha Bojanic had a team-high 19 digs.

For UP, junior Reghan Pukis had 14 kills, freshman Carey Williams had 20 digs, senior Hannah Troutman had 16 digs but was held to eight kills, and sophomore Cali Troutman had 27 assists.

Portland State improved to 7-3, while Portland dropped to 7-3.

Next for PSU is

The Pilots will play host to Texas-El Paso at 5 p.m. Friday, also in the Nike Invitational. Portland State takes on Cal State Northridge at 3 p.m. Friday at Chiles Center as well.

GEORGE FOX 3, Lewis & Clark 1

The visiting Pioneers won the first set, 25-21, then lost 21-25, 19-25, 18-25 in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams.

L&C slipped to 1-7 overall. GFU is 2-2 this season.

Kortney Meyer (14 kills) and Emma Contreras (12) led the Lewis & Clark attack, and Mikayla Lopez had 30 assists. Contreras had a team-best 19 digs.

The Pios' next match is 7 p.m. Saturday at Linfield.


CONCORDIA 2, Cal Baptist 1 (2 OT)

A penalty kick goal by Gabrielle Ewing gave the Cavaliers the win in the 106th minute.

Concordia led 1-0 after Sydney Van Steenberge's score in the 16th minute.

Cal Baptist tied the game 10:16 later.

The Cavaliers finished with an edge of 21-15 in shots, with seven on goal to three by Cal Baptist. The visitors led in corner kicks, 10-7.

Concordia climbed to 3-2, while Cap Baptist fell to 1-3.

The Cavs will open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Sunday, taking on Central Washington at 1 p.m. in Ellensburg.
