Jazz take out Blazers in OT
SALT LAKE CITY — Ricky Rubio scored 11 of his 30 points in the final 2:14 of overtime in leading Utah to a 112-103 victory over the Trail Blazers Wednesday night at Vivint Smart Home Arena.
Damian Lillard piled up 33 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Portland (4-4), which lost for the third time in four games. Jusuf Nurkic added 19 points and 11 rebounds and CJ McCollum had 16 points and 10 boards for the Blazers.
Rookie Donovan Mitchell had 28 points for the Jazz (5-3).
Utah jumped to a 102-96 lead in the extra session. McCollum's short bank shot made it 102-98 with two minutes left.
After an exchange of free throws, Rubio sank a pair at the line to make it 105-99 with 1:15 remaining.
Lillard drove for a dunk with to cut it to 105-101, Rubio hit two more at the line and Portland's Moe Harkless scored on a put-back. When Rubio buried a 3, the Jazz had a 110-103 lead with 30.9 ticks left, and it was over.
Utah led 22-20 after the first quarter, Mitchell coming off the bench for 10 points for the Jazz.
The Blazers, who had suffered through a six-point second quarter in Monday's 99-85 loss to Toronto on Monday night, struggled again in the quarter, going five minutes without a field goal to fall behind 29-21. Portland battled back to tie it at 39-39 at halftime.
Nurkic got going in the third quarter and the Blazers took a 69-64 lead into the final period.
Rubio's 3-point shot gave Utah a 74-72 advantage with 9:28 left. Moments later, Lillard drained a 3 for a 77-76 Portland lead.
The teams went back and forth, Lillard's 3 giving the Blazers an 89-86 edge with 4:12 to play.
McCollum followed with another trey to make it 92-86 with 3:18 left.
But the Jazz banged in back-to-back 3's to tie it at 92-92 inside the final 90 seconds.
Lillard's driving layup pushed Portland back ahead 94-92 with 45.3 seconds remaining.
Rudy Gobert dunked after an offensive board to square the count at 94-94 with 29 seconds to go.
Lillard missed a 3 and Utah rebounded, but Rubio traveled, and the Blazers regained the ball with 9.8 seconds left. Lillard's driving layup was blocked by Gobert as time expired, and it was on to overtime.
