Dana Altman gets 600th win
There was never a doubt that Dana Altman would reach the 600-win club as a college basketball coach this season.
And there was never a doubt it would happen on Friday.
Oregon's 114-56 win over Alabama State in front of 8,100 fans at Matthew Knight Arena made Altman the 34th NCAA Division I men's basketball coach to win 600 games.
In his eighth season at Oregon, Altman is 190-77 as the Ducks' coach. He is one of 10 active coaches to reach 600 wins.
It was the most complete showing yet for the young Ducks (3-0), who all got into the act against the overmatched visitors.
"We've made a step in each game," Altman said. "I think our energy level was better, our execution was better; defensively at times they were better."
All 11 Ducks who played scored, six of them in double figures.
Freshman 6-9 forward Kenny Wooten had 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots. Freshman 6-4 guard Victor Bailey Jr. added 18 points. Senior transfer Elijah Brown had 15 points, six assists and two steals and Payton Pritchard 13 points and seven assists. Brown and Pritchard each hit 3 of 4 3-point shots.
The Ducks shot 62.5 percent from the field — both inside and outside the 3-point line. They had 12 steals and 29 assists on 40 field goals.
Oregon had 23 fast-break points, 34 point off 17 Hornets turnovers and 18 second-chance points.
Senior post Roman Sorkin did not play as a precaution because of a foot problem.
Oregon concludes a four-game homestand to open the season by playing host to Ball State at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Perhaps the Ducks, who have overwhelmed three opponents 284-187, will be tested when they come to Portland on Thanksgiving to open the PK80 tournament against Connecticut.
In women's basketball …
• UC Irvine used balanced scoring and a 32-14 advantage in bench scoring to beat the visiting Portland Pilots (3-1). Rachelle Owens had 12 points to lead Portland. She had eight of her points early in the third quarter to pull the Pilots within two before UC Irvine pulled away.
• Host UC Davis (3-0) shot 54 percent on 3-pointers to outscore Portland State (0-3). Sidney Rielly made 4 of 5 3-pointers and scored 20 points. The Viks shot 41 percent, but were outscored by 12 points from behind the arc.
