Oregon State picks Jonathan Smith
University of Washington offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith will be Oregon State's next head football coach.
OSU will make an official announcement Wednesday afternoon.
Smith, 38, has been O-coordinator at Washington since 2014 under Chris Petersen. Prior to that, he was quarterbacks coach under Petersen at Boise State for two seasons (2012-13).
The Glendora, California, native became starting quarterback late in his freshman year at Oregon State (1998) and started for his final three seasons there. He was the quarterback of the 2000 team that went 11-1 — losing only at Washington 33-30 — and routed Notre Dame 41-9 in the 2001 Fiesta Bowl.
Smith began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at OSU for one year under Dennis Erickson (2002) and one year under Mike Riley (2003). Smith had played for both coaches. He then moved to Idaho, where he coached quarterbacks from 2004-09, before taking the O-coordinator job at Montana for two seasons.
