Jan. 16-17, 1944

The University of Oregon Army Students blast the Florence Coast Guard team, 68-39, in a basketball game in Eugene.

• First place in two city independent hoops leagues is affected as the E.J. Bartells team nudges the Navy Receiving barracks team, 39-32, at Commerce High, and 99 Tavern defeats the Black Panthers, 54-28, at the Swan Island barracks.

Several other games in various leagues take place in Portland. Among the outcomes: Vanport Cafe 50, 329 Controllers, 40; Multnomah church 38, Hinson church 36; Pacific Packards 66, Vanport Sheriffs 30.
