• Center Bill Walton returns to the San Diego Clippers lineup, finally recovered from a stress fracture in a foot. He hadn't played since in a 1978 playoff game for Portland against Seattle, and many wondered if he ever would play again. He says he feels fine and is "very happy" after playing 15 minutes and getting eight points and four rebounds in a win over Phoenix.

• Portland Timbers forward Clyde Best asks the club to trade him.

• In a Northwest Women's Basketball League game, Oregon defeats Portland State 88-72 at the PSU gym behind Bev Smith (23 points) and Suzanne Washington (20).

In another league game, Carol Menken scores 33 points as Oregon State defeats Montana State, 97-72.

• Snow and ice force postponement of high school basketball games in Portland.
