• Game 1 of the three-game Civil War series for 2018 belonged to Luke Heimlich and the Beavers.

Heimlich (9-1) allowed one earned run (two total) and four hits in 7 1/3 innings at Corvallis. He walked one and struck out 12 before a crowd of 3,692.

Heimlich surpassed Jonah Nickerson's OSU record for career strikeouts, reaching 305 (in 76 games). With 29 wins, he is third all-time at Oregon State, trailing Ken Noble (30) and Ben Wetzler (36).

Jake Mulholland pitched a one-walk two-K ninth inning for his 10th save of the year.

OSU scored single runs in the first and second to lead 2-0. Oregon got a run in the third; the Beavers got one back in the bottom of the frame.

Oregon State, ranked from sixth to 10th in the national polls, gained more distance with two runs in the fifth.

Oregon added a run in the seventh, but finished with only four hits to the Beavers' eight.

All-American second baseman Nick Madrigal returned from injury for OSU and went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Cadyn Grenier was 2 for 4, leadoff man Steven Kwan had a double and two runs scored for the Beavs, and Trevor Larnach homered.

Matt Mercer (4-4) came out after five innings on the mound for the Ducks. He gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks.

Oregon State improved to 27-6 overall and 8-5 in the Pac-12.

Oregon is 19-16, 6-10.

The series continues at 4 p.m. Friday and concludes at 4 p.m. Saturday, with both games also at Goss Stadium.
