OREGON SPORTS HISTORY/1929: Mount Hood Country Club opens for second year of golfing, rest in Welches

May 15-16, 1929

More than 70 members of the Oregon Women's Golf Association play the first 18 holes of the annual 54-hole sweepstakes tournament at Multnomah Golf Club. The best gross score, 90, is turned in by Mrs. Kenneth S. Reed from Waverley for a four-stroke lead.

• The Mount Hood Country Club has opened for its second season in Welches. The nine-hole golf course and surrunding area are described as "a place for tired city people to rest," and fish. It's the forerunner to what is known today as Resort at the Mountain.

• The Portland Beavers post 7-6 and 10-7 (11 innings) Pacific Coast League baseball victories at the Seattle Indians.

• The Oregon State and University of Oregon varsity and freshman water polo teams are set for a rematch at Corvallis. The Webfoots won both games the previous week.
