WEDNESDAY LOCAL SPORTS NEWS/Pilots' Pervolarakis takes No. 4 seed to third set before falling in NCAA singles opener


Former Beaverton High golf star Gigi Stoll won a national championship on Wednesday with the Arizona Wildcats, who beat Alabama, 3-2, with a 19th-hole birdie by Haley Moore providing the winning point.

Stoll, a junior, lost her match in the finals, 4 and 3, at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma, after posting victories in quarterfinal and semifinal wins Tuesday over UCLA and Stanford.

It was Arizona's third NCAA title and first since 2000.

Stoll, who also played basketball for Beaverton, as the Oregon Sports Awards Prep Athlete of the Year in 2014-15, with numerous state junior championships and seven Oregon Golf Association junior player-of-the-year honors.


University of Portland senior Michail Pervolarakis, ranked 57th in the nation, lost in three sets to No. 4 Petros Chrysochos of host Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA championships.

The three-time All-American for the Demon Deacons prevailed, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, in the final match of the day.

The two players both hail from Cyprus and trained together since they were 8 years old. It was their first match against each other as collegians.

Chrysochos (27-1 in dual singles this season) has won 25 in a row.

The first set was delayed for an hour by rain with Chrysochos leading, 5-4.

Pervolarakis finished his season 25-7 in singles and was 81-29 during his four years with the Pilots.


Seattle 1, OAKLAND 0

Marco Gonzales (4-3) and the bullpen led the visiting Mariners to the win and a 2-0 lead in the three-game series.

Seattle (29-19) and Oakland (25-24) will meet at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

The M's got their run Wednesday in the four inning, when Guillermo Heredia doubled, went to third on a fly out and scored on Kyle Seager's grounder to shortstop.

Gonzales allowed two hits and two walks in seven innings.

Edwin Diaz struck out three batters in the ninth for a one-inning closing performance that produced his 17th save of the year.
