Pickles win road opener
The solid team pitching continued for the Portland Pickles on Monday, as they won their first road game of the 2018 West Coast League season.
The Pickles defeated the Cowlitz Black Bears, 7-2.
Sam Lauderdale (who worked the first three innings), Colin Suter (two innings), Joel Casillas (three innings) and Colby Wyatt (who pitched the ninth) combined on a seven-hitter.
Suter picked up the win. Casillas gave up both runs on a seventh-inning triple.
But through four games, the Pickles have the best record (3-1) in the WCL and have allowed six runs.
Portland took a 4-0 lead Monday with four runs in the fifth. The Pilots led 5-0 through 6 1/2 frames and tallied their final two runs in the ninth, finishing with 10 hits.
Top hitters for Portland included shortstop Gio Diaz (2 for 4 with his fifth RBI of the season), left fielder Jake Berry (2 for 4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored) and first baseman Jace McKinney from the University of Portland (2 for 4 with a double, triple and two RBIs)
Cowlitz (1-3) will play host to Games 2 and 3 of the series at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
