Tampa Bay gets a three-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Seattle holds on to win, 5-4; Span and Haniger homer

LEAKEMike Leake scattered eight hits and Seattle held on to beat Tampa Bay 5-4 Thursday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Tampa Bay's Johnny Field hit a three-run double off reliever Alex Colome — a former Ray — in the bottom of the ninth inning, but third baseman Kyle Seager made a nice backhanded stop on a grounder and the long throw for the third out.

Denard Span and Mitch Haniger hit solo homers. Haniger also had a two-run double. Dee Gordon's sacrifice fly gave Seattle a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Seattle runs came off Austin Pruitt, who had to relieve bullpen pitcher Ryne Stanek in the second inning.

Leake gave up eight hits and two runs while striking out three and walking one in eight innings. Colome finished things.

The Mariners (39-23) and Rays (28-33) continue their four-game series at 4 p.m. PT Friday. Marco Gonzales of Seattle (6-3) pitches opposite Wilmer Font (0-2).
