Born in Riverton, Wyoming, Deal competed in track and field for Montana State, then moved to Eugene. He starred in the hammer, placing second in the 1996 Olympics, his third of four appearances in the Games. He went on to coach the throwing events for the University of Oregon, and joined the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2014, he was voted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.
