Winterhawks edge Royals
A pair of second-period goals were enough for the Portland Winterhawks to beat the Victoria Royals for the second night in a row.
Cross Hanas and Joachim Blichfeld scored off of Cody Glass assists, and the Winterhawks beat the Royals, 2-1, in Western Hockey League action on Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.
The win improved Portland to 9-6-0-1 (19 points). Victoria is 9-5-0-0 (18).
Shane Farkas came up big in a game where both goalies shined. Farkas finished with 34 saves, including one in the dying seconds to secure the win.
Farkas also made a big save on an open opportunity for the Royals' D-Jay Jerome with 1:40 remaining. Victoria pulled goalie Griffen Outhouse for an extra attacker with 3:22 left.
Outhouse came up big a number of times and finished with 36 saves.
Hanas, a 16-year-old rookie, scored his second goal of the season 2:10 into the second period. Blichfeld had the second assist on the game's first goal.
Blichfeld scored his 12th goal of the season on a power play at 8:46 of the second period.
Dino Kambeitz scored a power-play goal for Victoria 5:31 into the third period to set up a tense final 14 minutes for the 3,631 fans.
Portland went 1 for 5 on the power play, Victoria 1 for 4.
The Winterhawks complete their second three-game weekend in a row at 5 p.m. Sunday with a game at Spokane.
