Hard-running Mel Renfro helps lead Jefferson High to a 7-0 win over Lincoln before a standing-room crowd of 7,500. Halfback Mike Barnes gallops 68 yards for a third-quarter touchdown.

The win gives the Democrats their third consecutive Portland Interscholastic League title. Jefferson earns a spot in the A-1 playoffs, looking for its third straight state championship.

The Democrats now own the state record of 22 wins in a row. The old mark of 21 was set by Medford from 1925-28.

Renfro runs away with the PIL scoring title.

Elsewhere on Friday night, David Douglas claims the Metro League football crown and the league's only berth in the state playoffs. Central Catholic is the runner-up, followed by Beaverton, Milwaukie, Astoria, Gresham, Hillsboro and Clackamas.

North Catholic defeats Catlin Gabel, 26-7.

• On Saturday afternoon, Oregon tops California 20-18 at Multnomah Stadium with a storybook finish. Cleveland Jones, 5-5 and 151 yards, makes a fantastic fourth-quarter catch of a Dave Grosz pass for the winning 35-yard touchdown on fourth-and-4 before 20,852 fans.

Portland State falls 66-0 in its homecoming game against Whitworth at Roosevelt High.

• Pete Ward scores three times to lead Lewis & Clark PE to a 46-6 six-man football victory over Reed College at Reed.

• The top two teams in the seven-man touch football league, Twilight Room and Priestly Oil, will meet at Normandale Park for the title.

• Nine grade-school flag football games are played in four leagues sponsored by the Portland Park Bureau.

• The Multnomah Athletic Club Yanks move into third place in the 10-team city handball standings. Fire Department 43 leads the league.

• Champ Husted, who operates Milwaukie Bowl with his father, takes the lead eight rounds into and at the halfway mark of the Oregon State match game bowling championships at Rose City Bowl.
