FRIDAY WHL RECAP/Three goals from Joachim Blichfeld highlight 5-2 win for Portland over Everett

Joachim Blichfeld scored three goals, and the Portland Winterhawks beat the Everett Silvertips 5-2 on Friday in a Western Hockey League game in front of 4,007 fans at Memorial Coliseum.

Portland improved to 13-6-0-2 (28 points) and moved within two points of U.S. Division leader Everett (15-7-0-0).

Blichfeld has 20 goals this season. He also had an assist on Friday.

Cody Glass had three assists for Portland. Jake Gricius had a goal and assist, and Mason Mannek sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

Blichfeld put Portland up 2-1 midway through the first period off a feed from Gricius. He gave Portland a 3-1 lead on a shot-pass that banked in off of an Everett defender with 1:02 left in the second period and completed his hat trick with a breakaway goal 3:05 into the third period off a stretch pass from Glass.

Gricius opened the scoring 3:40 into the first period, scoring his 10th goal of the season with assists from Blichfeld and Glass.

Everett tied the score 8:04 into the game on a Jalen Price goal, but Blichfeld's first goal restored the Portland lead just over two minutes later.

Portland goalie Shane Farkas made 17 of his 27 saves in the third period.

The Winterhawks were 1 for 4 on the power play and killed all five Everett power plays.

Portland plays at Seattle at 6 p.m. Saturday, a game that will be televised live on KRCW (32, Comcast 3).
