Timbers draft defender, midfielder
The Portland Timbers made two additional picks as the MLS SuperDraft wrapped up on Monday.
Portland selected defender Francesco Moore out of Indiana in the third round (No. 71 overall) and midfielder David Zalzman out of Memphis with the final pick in the draft (No. 95).
Moore, 23, was a four-year starter for an Indiana team that made the national semifinals in 2017 and 2018. A first-team all-Big Ten selection as a junior and senior, he helped Indiana lead the nation in shutouts in 2017 and 2018.
Zalzman, 22, played three seasons at Memphis and was the Togers' team captain. A native of Venezuela, Zalzman spent three years with FC Barcelona's youth program and represented Venezuela internationally at the 2013 under-17 FIFA World Cup.
Like first-round pick Ryan Sierakowski and second-round pick Lennart Hein, Moore and Zalzman are likely to start their professional careers with Timbers 2 in the United Soccer League.
