MONDAY LOCAL SPORTS NEWS/OSU baseball ranked No. 8; Beavers' Thompson Jr. honored by Pac-12; UO 5th, OSU 10th in women's basketball


The Portland Timbers made two additional picks as the MLS SuperDraft wrapped up on Monday.

Portland selected defender Francesco Moore out of Indiana in the third round (No. 71 overall) and midfielder David Zalzman out of Memphis with the final pick in the draft (No. 95).

Moore, 23, was a four-year starter for an Indiana team that made the national semifinals in 2017 and 2018. A first-team all-Big Ten selection as a junior and senior, he helped Indiana lead the nation in shutouts in 2017 and 2018.

Zalzman, 22, played three seasons at Memphis and was the Togers' team captain. A native of Venezuela, Zalzman spent three years with FC Barcelona's youth program and represented Venezuela internationally at the 2013 under-17 FIFA World Cup.

Like first-round pick Ryan Sierakowski and second-round pick Lennart Hein, Moore and Zalzman are likely to start their professional careers with Timbers 2 in the United Soccer League.


Defending national champion Oregon State is No. 8 in the poll.

OSU had been ranked second by Perfect Game and seventh by Collegiate Baseball going into the 2019 season. ranks Vanderbilt at the top, with LSU second. The rest of the top 10, in order: Texas Tech, Louisville, UCLA, Florida, North Carolina, Oregon State, Georgia and Mississippi.

Stanford is 12th, and Cal State Fullerton rounds out the top 25.


Oregon State senior Stephen Thompson Jr. was named the Pac-12 men's basketball player of the week after scoring a combined 51 points in wins over USC and UCLA.

The 6-4 guard from Los Angeles had a career-high 34 points to go with 10 rebounds and five assists in Thursday's 79-74 overtime win over USC. He followed with 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals in Sunday's 79-66 win over UCLA.


Oregon is fifth and Oregon State 10th again this week in the Associated Press rankings.

The Ducks (15-1) trail the top four of No. 1 Notre Dame, Connecticut, Baylor and Louisville.

Stanford is sixth, followed by Mississippi State, North Carolina State and No. 9 Maryland.

Gonzaga is 13th, and Arizona State is tied for 20th.


Warner Pacific's Cortez Rodelo has been named Cascade Collegiate Conference wrestler of the week.

A freshman from Aloha, he went 3-0 in the heavyweight class at the Boxer Openn hosted by Pacific University, defeating wrestlers from Oregon State, Clackamas CC and Umpqua CC.


The Oregon women's lacrosse team added transfer Marlee Moon Gaddy to its 2019 squad. A native of Florida, she played in eight games and scored four goals as a freshman at Stony Brook.
