WEDNESDAY LOCAL SPORTS NEWS/Oregon State coach Boss assists at U.S. training camp; Timbers gain rights to central defender Dielna

The Portland Pilots have added two transfers.

Midfielder Jamie Rita will be a junior in the fall. The Burien, Washington native had a goal and one assist in 22 games at Washington State.

Goalkeeper Payton Woodward has three years of eligibility remaining. As a freshman at Kentucky last season, she had 15 saves in three appearances (two starts). She was all-state at Fayetteville (Arkansas) High.

Pilots coach Michelle French said Rita is a composed and intelligent playmaker and Woodward is confident and aggressive coming off her line.

Oregon State coach Terry Boss is serving as goalkeeper coach for the United States men at their training camp in Chula Vista, California.

Boss, a Philomath native, was the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2018, his first season in Corvallis. He is working under new national team head coach Gregg Berhalter. The came goes through Feb. 2 and culminates with exhibition matches against Panama (Jan. 27) and Costa Rica (Feb. 2).

Boss played seven seasons of pro soccer before retiring in 2012. He finished his career with the Seattle Sounders as the backup to Kasey Keller for three seasons.

Portland Timbers has acquired the MLS rights to central defender Claude Dielna from the New England Revolution for $100,000 in general allocation money.

A 6-0, 190-pounder, Dielna figures to compete for a starting spot alongside fellow Frenchman Larys Mabiala, following the departure of Liam Ridgewell.

Dielna, 31, joined New England as a Designated Player in 2017. He has not played in a league match since July, and the Revolution declined his 2019 contract option.

The Timbers did not discuss how close the parties are to agreeing on a contract. The Timbers likely will pay Dielna less than the $780,000 base salary he received in 2018.

Dielna played in six European leagues before joining New England. In two seasons with the Revolution, he played in 28 games, starting 26 times.
