SATURDAY WHL RECAP/Hofer earns shutout with 25 saves before Mascot Night crowd of 9.487 at Moda Center

Cody Glass returned from injury and scored the insurance goal into an empty net with 1:07 remaining, and Joel Hofer stopped 25 shots to lead the Portland Winterhawks past the Red Deer Rebels 2-0 before 9,487 Mascot Night fans at Moda Center.

The victory clinched a Western Hockey League playoff berth for the Hawks.

The winning goal came 41 seconds in to the third period. Jared Freadrich notched his 10th goal of the season off assists by Seth Jarvis and Jaydon Dureau.

Glass got his 14th goal of the season in his comeback from an eight-game absence.

The shutout was the sixth this season for Portland and the third for Hofer.

Neither team scored on the power play; Red Deer was 0 for 3, Portland 0 for 1.

The Winterhawks had 29 shots on goal.

Portland improved to 34-16-3-3 (74 points), while Red Deer fell to 29-21-4-1 (63).
