SATURDAY WHL RECAP/Host Cougars avenge Friday loss to Portland, keeping Winterhawks without a power-play goal

Prince George earned a weekend split with the Portland Winterhawks with a strong third period on Saturday night.

The Hawks, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 Friday night on three power-play goals, got outscored 4-1 in the final 20 minutes to lose 5-2.

Portland fell to 39-20-3-3 (84 points), while Prince George improved to 18-40-5-3 (44).

Clay Hanus of Portland notched the first goal, his seventh of the season. Reece Newkirk got an assist on the score, which came at 3:22 of the second period.

The Cougars pulled even 5:09 later and went ahead at 5:20 of the third period.

Prince George upped its advantage to 3-1 at 12:25, and a power-play goal at 14:32 made the score 4-1.

Cross Hanas' eighth goal of the season for the Hawks made it a 4-2 game at 15:48. Josh Paterson and Jaydon Dureau assisted.

Josh Maser scored into an empty net at 18:58.

Joel Hofer stopped 44 of 48 shots in goal for Portland, which went 0 for 4 on the power play.
