OREGON SPORTS HISTORY/1966: Jefferson guard leads Oregon in scoring; Palmer, Stoudamire, Trebelhorn among other top point producers

The Portland Interscholastic League champion Wilson Trojans are ranked No. 1 in the state, but coach Ole Johnson says he'll retire after what is his 15th season as a head coach while staying on as activities director.

Jefferson guard Billy Nickleberry is five points ahead of anyone else in leading the state with a 26.7-points per game average. Others high in scoring include Bill Palmer of Lincoln, Willie Stoudamire of Washington, Tom Trebelhorn of Cleveland, and Clark Hoss of West Linn.

The 5-8 Nickleberry and 6-6 Palmer make the all-state team.

• David Douglas wins the Class A-1 wrestling title at Gill Coliseum.

The Scots place second to South Eugene in the state gymnastics championships.

• Utah tops Oregon State 70-64 in the NCAA Far West regionals at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

• Portland State College's wrestling team places third in the NCAA college division championships at Mankato, Minn. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo wins. Wilkes is second.

• Portland manager John Lipon and the Beavers are about to open camp in Tucson, Ariz.

• Portland Meadows' 21st season, which will have 60 days of live horse racing, starts next week, too.

• Signups are set at the Portland Police Athletic Association ball for men's mushball teams. The league season will start on May 15.
