Oregon vs. Wisconsin in NCAA men's first round
The Oregon Ducks are headed to San Jose, California to face Wisconsin at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Ducks (23-12) received a No. 12 seed on Sunday while the Badgers (23-10) are a No. 5 seed.
The winner will face No. 4 seed Kansas State (25-8) or No. 13 UC Irvine (30-5) in the second round.
Wisconsin, ranked 19th in the nation, went 1-1 in the Big Ten tournament, beating Nebraska 66-62 before falling to top-seeded and No. 6-ranked Michigan State 67-55.
Oregon earned a spot in the 68-team field by winning the Pac-12 tournament on Saturday night. The Ducks beat Washington 68-48 in the final, after winning three games the previous three nights.
Oregon, which entered the conference tourney as the No. 6 seed, mowed down Washington State 84-51 in the first round, Utah 66-54 in the quarterfinals and Arizona State 79-75 in overtime in the semifinals.
Defense has carried the Ducks through most of what is an eight-game winning streak after a tumultuous early season that included the loss to injury of star freshman center Bol Bol.
The 48 points allowed to the Huskies in the Pac-12 tournament title game was the fewest in conference finals history. Oregon gave up an average of jsut 57.0 points in four tourney games.
Junior guard Payton Pritchard from West Linn High was named Pac-12 tournament MVP. He had 20 points, six rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the title game.
Gonzaga, Duke, Virginia and North Carolina are the No. 1 seeds. The Bulldogs will meet the winner between No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson and Prairie View A&M in the first round at Salt Lake City.
Also from the Pac-12, Washington got a No. 9 seed and will face No. 8 Utah State on Friday at Columbus, Ohio.
Arizona State, which was the second seed in the Pac-12 tournament, will have to play in one of two "First Four" games in Dayton, Ohio. The Sun Devils will meet St. John's on Wednesday, with the winner to go up against No. 6 seed Buffalo at Tulsa, Oklahoma.
