Winterhawks' Blichfeld wins WHL Player of the Year Award
Joachim Blichfeld was briefly disappointed when the San Jose Sharks sent him back to Portland for one more season of junior hockey.
The forward from Frederikshavn, Denmark then made the most of his 20-year-old season.
On Wednesday, Blichfeld was named winner of the Four Broncos Memorial Award as the Western Hockey League Player of the Year for 2018-19.
Blichfeld led the league with 53 goals and 114 points in 68 regular-season games, numbers that would have been even higher had Cody Glass been available for more than 38 of those games.
The Winterhawks also won the WHL's Scholastic Team of the Year award.
Blichfeld is the fourth Winterhawk WHL player of the year. Oliver Bjorkstrand (118 points, 2014-15), Steve Konowalchuk (104 points, 1991-92) and Perry Turnbull (118 points, 1978-79) were the others.
Blichfeld had 105 goals and 123 assists in 187 regular-season games over three seasons with the Winterhawks.
Currently training with Denmark in advance of the 2019 IIHF World Championship tournament, Blichfeld is expected to begin his pro career next season with the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League.
This is the sixth time Portland has been honored as the WHL's Scholastic Team of the Year. Eight players enrolled at Sunset High had a combined 3.0 GPA, and 16 players earned a combined 96 credit hours at Clackamas Community College.
