OREGON SPORTS HISTORY/1956: Walker Cup golfer leads the way for Portland Pilots

May 14-15, 1956

Coach Denny Sullivan's Grant High track and field team wins its third consecutive Portland Interscholastic League championship. Benson, Jefferson and Lincoln go 2-3-4 at Roosevelt.

Grant's baseball team gets a two-hitter from Jack Riley to beat Roosevelt 6-2 and clinch a spot in the state playoffs, while Tommy Brauckmiller raises his record to 6-1 in pitching Benson past Jeff, 2-0. The next day, Lincoln claims the PIL title when the Washington Colonials knock off Grant 12-10.

• Walker Cup golfer Bruce Cudd of the University of Portland is a medalist with a 2-under-par 70 at Forest Hill in Forest Grove, but host Pacific defeats the Pilots 14.5-4.5.

At Riverside, Portland Air Base golfers defeat Portland State 10.5-7.5.

And, at Waverley Country Club, Mrs. F.J. Underwood edges Mrs. W.H. Blakeley 3 and 2 to win the spring handicap.

• KPOJ radio has two major league games on the dial for the coming weekend: Brooklyn vs. Cincinnati on Saturday and St. Louis at the New York Giants on Sunday.
