• The Trail Blazers are set to name a new president: Steve Patterson, former Houston Rockets general manager. He'll replace Bob Whitsitt. Other top candidates reportedly included Erin Hubert, Tim McNamara and Tod Leiweke.

• After a New York Times editorial in 2001 lambasted the University of Oregon for putting Heisman Trophy candidate/quarterback Joey Harrington on a billboard in Manhattan — "It is hard to believe there was no more constructive way for the University of Oregon to spend $250,000," the Times wrote — Harrington and UO officials announce a plan to endow three scholarships by selling cut-up pieces of the billboard.
