WEDNESDAY LOCAL SPORTS NEWS/Basketball writers pick him for citizenship honor, laud his service to local youth; Winterhawks announce preseason games

Damian Lillard of the Trail Blazers has won the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for 2018-19.

The award goes annual to a player, coach or athletic trainer for outstanding service and dedication to the community.

Three other Blazers have won the award since its inception in 1974-75: Terry Poter (1992-93), Chris Dudley (1995-96) and Brian Grant (1998-99).

Lillard was among five finalists this year. The others: Golden State coach Steve Kerr, Memphis Grizzlies guard Mike Conley, Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker and Charlotte Hornets center Bismack Biyombo.

The award is voted on by the Professional Basketball Writers Association, a group of more than 200 writers and editors.

Lillard was nominated in particular for his support of Portland high school students through his RESPECT program, anti-bullying efforts, participation in school events and reinforcement of the value of education.

Lillard, a 28-year-old four-time NBA All-Star guard, also has been an ambassador for Special Olympics since 2013.

"Damian Lillard's sustained commitment to inspire young people in Portland is inspiriting," PBWA President Josh Robbins said in a statement.


Portland will play six preseason games ahead of the 2019-20 Western Hockey League season. The Winterhawks will play three games in Everett and three in Kennewick, Washington.

At Everett, Portland will play Spokane at 3 p.m. Aug. 20, Vancouver at 11 a.m. Aug. 31 and Tri-City at 3 p.m. Sept. 1.

At Kennewick, Portland will play host Tri-City at 7 p.m. Sept. 5, Spokane at 3 p.m. Sept. 6 and Seattle at 3 p.m. Sept. 7.

The regular-season schedule will be announced in late June.
