Seattle manages only six hits, while Whit Merrifield hits two homers and drives in six runs in 9-0 win; Royals go for sweep Wednesday

MERRIFIELDKansas City pitching and hitter Whit Merrifield did major damage to the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.

Homer Bailey and two relievers combined to allow only six hits and Merrifield hit two homers and drove in six runs as Kansas City beat Seattle 9-0 at T-Mobile Park.

The Royals (25-48) go for the three-game sweep over the Mariners (31-46) on Wednesday. Marco Gonzales (7-6, 4.50) pitches for Seattle opposite Brad Keller (3-8, 3.97) in the 3:40 p.m. game.

Alex Gordon's two-run single in the first inning gave Kansas City all the runs it needed. And, Jorge Soler added a solo homer in the third inning. But, then Merrifield produced the next six runs, hitting a three-run homer in the fourth inning, a sacrifice fly in the sixth and a two-run homer in the eighth. He went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and the six RBIs.

Tom Murphy and Omar Narvaez doubled among the six hits for Seattle.

Yusei Kikuchi gave up nine hits and six runs in five innings for Seattle. Bailey allowed six hits and struck out six and walked two in 7.2 innings.
