TUESDAY LOCAL SPORTS NEWS/Gelabert, Soriano, Garcia team up for two-hit shutout at Salem-Keizer

Hillsboro 7, SALEM-KEIZER 0

The Hops scored three quick runs and held the home team to two hits as they took the series opener at Volcanoes Stadium.

Hillsboro improved to 8-4 atop the Class A Northwest League South Division, while Salem-Keizer dropped to 7-5, tied for second with the Eugene Emeralds.

Hillsboro starter Michel Gelabert (1-0) pitched five innings with one hit alllowed and six strikeouts. Franklyn Soriano fanned three batters in three innings, giving up the other Volcanoes hit. Justin Garcia had one K in pitching the ninth.

Salem-Keizer starter Jacob Lopez (1-1) gave up eight hits and seven runs in 4.1 innings.

An error on a ground ball enabled Hillsboro to score its first run. Right fielder Kristian Robinson followed later in the first inning with a two-run homer to right center field.

Catcher Ryan January got a home run in the fourth over the right field wall to give Hillsboro a 4-0 lead.

Doubles from Jesus Marriaga and center fielder Jorge Barrosa gave Hillsboro three runs in the fifth.

Game 2 of the three-game series is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
