OREGON SPORTS HISTORY/1952: Raid nets 23 slot machines at two Portland courses

July 2-3, 1952

A total of 23 slot machines are hauled from Riverside and Alderwood golf clubs, with the managers arrested in a raid, according to Multnomah County Sheriff Terry Schrunk.

• Former New York Yankee and St. Louis Brown Fred Sanford tosses a three-hitter as the Portland Beavers shut out the San Diego Padres 7-0 in Pacific Coast League baesball at Vaughn Street.

• The 20th annual greyhound racing season continues with a 7:30 p.m. first post at Multnomah Stadium.

• The Joie Chitwood Auto Daredevils show draws 4,000 fans to Jantzen Beach Arena and now heads to a performance at Portland Speedway. Cars drive through flaming walls, with ramp-to-ramp racing, head-on collisions, "dive bombing" and other activities as the highlights.

• Portland's Erv Lind's Florists will be back in Northwest Major Girls' league softball action for three weekend games against the Seattle Epicures at Normandale Park.
