Utah 97, Portland 93

Second-year guard Anfernee Simons shined for the Blazers, but a strong third quarter helped lift the Jazz in Las Vegas Summer League play at Cox Pavilion.

Simons, who slipped on the final possession, twisting his right ankle, scored 35 points on 13-for-18 shooting in 30 minutes. He had 21 points in the first half and made his first six 3-point shots, five in the first quarter, which ended with Portland in front 25-21.

Utah trailed by one point at the half, then outscored the Blazzers 32-26 in the third quarter of game that wound up with nine lead changes.

Tanner McGrew had 17 points and went 5 for 8 from 3-point range for the Jazz. Tony Bradley added 17 points and seven rebounds.

Simons was 6 of 7 overall from 3-point range. The rest of the team went 5 for 22, and Portland shot .453 from the field, with Gary Trent Jr. the second-leading scorer, getting 12 points in 30 minutes (4 of 15 from the floor, 2 of 7 from beyond the arc).

Center Jarnell Stokes had 12 rebounds for the Blazers. Trent had five boards and five assists.

With the Blazers down by two points in the final seconds, Simons drove to the rim but had his shot blocked by Miye Oni of Utah (2-1).

The Jazz shot .479 from the floor and were 15 of 38 on 3-pointers.

Defending Vegas summer champion Portland (1-2) will plays the Oklahoma City Thunder at 5 p.m. Thursday.


HILLSBORO 8, Boise 2

A six-run fourth inning with five RBI singles and a run-scoring double paved the Hops' way at Ron Tonkin Field and gave them the series 2-1.

Hillsboro improved to 16-10 and is second in the Northwest League South behind the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (17-8). Boise dropped to 13-13 and is third in the division.

Four Hops combined for 14 strikeouts, with starter Luis Frias getting nine in 4.2 innings, with one run allowed.

Jacob Stevens (2-0) got the win. He gave up no hits or runs and fanned three in 2.1 innings.

Hillsboro led 1-0 after a second-inning RBI single by catcher Daniel Wasinger. Center fielder Kristian Robinson hit a solo home run to left field in the third inning, his fifth HR this season.

The fourth-inning outburst put the Hops on top 8-0. Third baseman David Garza's single made the score 3-0. Shortstop Steven Leyton's double came next. Designated hitter Andy Yerzy and first baseman Tristin English hit RBI singles that drove in three more runs, and Jorge Barrosa's single capped the inning.

Boise, which had five hits to 11 for Hillsboro, got single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Hops and Hawks will meet for three games, all in Boise, starting at 6:15 Thursday.


Portland's opener of an international exhibition series against Australia's Perth Colts was canceled after two innings on Tuesday. The score was 1-1. The teams will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Stadium.
