Athletics blast Mariners, 9-2
The Seattle Mariners started the season 13-2. On Tuesday, they fell to 20 games under .500 for the first time in 2019.
Matt Chapman had three hits and drove in five runs, and he and Matt Olson hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning as Oakland beat visiting Seattle 9-2 at Oakland.
Daniel Mengden (5-1) and two relievers combined to give up six hits — two by Omar Narvaez, solo homers that accounted for Seattle's only runs, in the second and ninth innings.
Marco Gonzales (10-8) gave up the two homers to Chapman and Olson. He allowed seven hits and six runs in six innings.
Chapman's RBI single put Oakland 2-1, and his two-run homer made the score 4-1 in the fifth inning. Olson followed with a line-drive homer.
Oakland moved to 54-41, and the Mariners dropped to 39-59. Seattle has lost five consecutive games and is 2-12 since June 26.
The teams play at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. A Seattle starter to be determined will face Oakland's newly acquired Homer Bailey in the mound matchup.
