Oregon sports history/1977: Timbers' playoff hopes dwindle after 2-1 NASL loss at Dallas; Mavericks lead division

July 30-31, 1977

Corvallis golfer Bob Gilder, tied for the lead going into the final round of the PGA Tour's $200,000 Philadelphia Golf Classic, finished fourth at Whitemarsh Country Club.

• John Fought of Portland and Tualatin Country Club wins the 56th annual Broadmoor Men's Invitational golf tournament, downing the defending champion, Bill Loeffler of Denver, 3 and 2 in the rain at Colorado Springs, Colo.

• The Portland Timbers' season basically comes down to one shot — and Willie Anderson's shootout drive caroms off the post at Ownby Stadium in Dallas, leaving the visitors with a 2-1 North American Soccer League defeat and all but out of the playoffs. Portland's goal came from the foot of Barry Lynch, with assists to goalkeeper Mick Hoban and Stewart Scullion.

• Terry Lee, Ed Gilliam and Chad Corcoran homer to lift the Portland Mavericks to a 6-2 win at the Walla Walla Padres in Northwet League baseball. Gary Zagelow allows six hits in 6.1 relief innings for the victory. The Mavs are 28-15 and lead second-place Salem by 13 games in the Southern Division.

• Hillsboro leads the 11-team City League after weekend play at Walker Stadium.

Irv Leopold is second, followed by Columbia Asbestos, PACC, Taylor Electric, Aden & Josi, Binyon Optical, Bags 4th Avenue, Gresham, Equitable Savings and Dr. Bernard's.

Irv Leopold's Steve Rudolph drives in three runs in a Sunday upset of Columbia Asbestos.
