Monday local sports news/Everett finally tops Hillsboro in NWL; Willow Creek LL advances to softball semis; Pilots AD joins NCAA women's soccer committee

For the first time in six tries this season, the AquaSox topped the Hops in Northwest League play.

Hillsboro pitchers walked 11 and the hops committed two costly errors in their fourth loss in five games.

Three Hillsboro runs in the eighth inning tied the game, but Everett got to Hops reliever Eduardo Herrera for two singles and three walks to take an 8-5 lead. The Hops scored one run in the ninth on a two-out single by Jorge Barrosa and got the tying run on base before the rally attempt ended.

Corbin Carroll hit a game-tying double for Hillsboro in the eighth and has a hit in each of his five games since joining the Hops (and has hit in 11 in a row overall). Tristin English had his six consecutive multi-hit game including his third home run. Eddie Hernandez also homered for Hillsboro.

The Hops are 35-21 overall remain in first place of the Northwest League South Division with an 11-7 second-half record, one game ahead of Eugene.

The series at Everett concludes with a 11 a.m. Tuesday game.


Led by Bridgette Boling's pitching and timely hitting, Willow Creek Little League of Northwest Portland advanced to the semifinals of the Little League Softball World Series.

The host team at Alpenrose Dairy, Willow Creek scored runs in the fourth and the fifth to beat South Williamsport, Pennsylvania 2-0 in a Monday quarterfinal.

Willow Creek meets Southeast Region champion Rowan Little League of Salisbury, North Carolina at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the first of two semifinal games. ESPN2 will carrie both semifinals, at 4 and 7 p.m.

The semifinal is a rematch of a Saturday pool-play game won by the Southeast representative 7-1.

Boling pitched all six innings, striking out 10 and scattering four hits to earn the win. She walked two.

Boling also put Willow Creek on top in the bottom of the fourth. She hit a leadoff single, took second on a groundout then scored on a throwing error as she attempted to steal third.

Willow Creek doubled the lead in the fifth Kaiya Suyama hit a leadoff single. Sophia Groshong, running for Suyama, took second on a Lucia Regnier bunt. Groshong scored from second on a single to center by Addiyn Gates.

Southeast representative Rowan LL beat Central representative from Polk City, Iowa 4-0 in Monday's quarterfinal. Rowan is 5-0 in the tournament. It has outscored its opponents 40-3 in the World Series.

In Monday's other quarterfinals, Southwest (Eastbank LL of River Ridge, Louisiana) beat Latin America (Olmeca LL Mexico City) 1-0 and Europe-Africa (Lombardia LL of Milano, Italy) knocked off West (Honolulu LL) 4-1.


University of Portland Vice President for Athletics Scott Leykam has been appointed to the NCAA committee that oversees Division I women's soccer. Leykam will serve a four-year term on the committee beginning on Sept. 1.

The 10-person women's soccer committee is responsible for the organization and implementation of the NCAA Championships tournament, including selection of the participants and creation of the bracket. The committee also establishes playing rules and procedures for competition.
