Italian team edges Willow Creek
LITTLE LEAGUE SOFTBALL
Willow Creek, representing Oregon District 4, lost 1-0 to Europe-Africa (Lombardia Little League of Milano, Italy) in Wednesday afternoon's third-place game at the World Series at Alpenrose Stadium.
The run came in the top of the sixth and final inning. Europe-Africa got back-to-back singles to lead off the frame; the second hit drove home the runner, who had stolen second.
Each team finished with four hits.
Oregon's Bridgette Boling was 2 for 3, and she went all the way on the mound, striking out 10 and walking two.
Oregon batters struck out three times and walked once.
• Southeast (Rowan LL of Salisbury, North Carolina) won the Little League Softball World Series championship on Wednesday night 4-1 over Southwest (Eastbank LL in River Ridge, Louisiana).
Southeast defeated Oregon 3-2 in a eight-inning Tuesday semifinal.
• In other consolation games: West (Honolulu LL) defeated Central (Central Iowa LL of Polk City, Iowa) 7-4, and East (South Little League of South Williamsport, Pennsylvania) downed Latin America (Olmeca LL of Mexico City) 6-1.
About 72 players divided into four teams will participate in the Portland training camp tournament, the Neely Cup, Aug. 21-24 at Memorial Coliseum.
Games are at 3 and 5 p.m. on Aug. 21 and at 4 and 6 p.m. on Aug. 22 and Aug. 23. The third-place game is at 3 p.m. Aug. 24, and the championship game will be at 5 p.m.
After the championship game, the Winterhawks' annual free Toyota Hockey Fan Fest will take place on the coliseum concourse.
On Tuesday, Aug. 20, 14 players will take part in the rookie camp for 2004-born players. Those rookies will play in the Neely Cup. Among them are players from families with a strong hockey lineage, including first-round bantam selection forward Kyle Chyzowski, Marek Hejduk (son of former Colorado Avalanche standout Milan Hejduk) and Minnesota native Jimmy Snuggerud, whose father Dave played 265 games in the NHL.
Tickets for the Neely Cup are $5 a day or $15 for all four days.
The Winterhawks will play three preseason games in Everett, Washington (Aug. 30-Sept. 1) and three at Kennewick, Wash. (Sept. 5-7).
The Hawks open their Western Hockey League regular season on Sept. 21 at home against the Tri-City Americans.
COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER
PORTLAND 3, British Columbia 2 (exhibition)
Junior Taryn Ries scored on two penalty kicks and senior Jasmine Garibay added a final goal as the host Pilots beat the Thunderbirds at Merlo Field.
Ries, who led UP in goals and points a year ago, scored in the 21st minute, after Portland's Emily Collier was fouled inside the box. The second PK came in the 67th minute, after a foul on Ries and after a goal by BC.
Garibay scored from about 18 yards off a cdross by freshman MJ Roe.
WEST COAST LEAGUE
Both league semifinals are headed to a decisive third game.
The Walla Walla Sweets knocked off the host Corvallis Knights 9-4 at Goss Stadium to square that series at 1-1, and the Victoria HarbourCats bounced back from a Tuesday road loss to beat the visiting Wenatchee AppleSox 7-2.
The rubber matches will take place on Thursday at Corvallis and Victoria.
