Catcher homers twice, drives in four runs; left-handed pitcher wins 13th game

MURPHYThe Seattle Mariners used Tom Murphy's two home runs and four RBIs and Marco Gonzales' pitching to post a 9-3 victory over the host Tampa Bay Rays in Monday's series opener before an announced crowd of 9,152 at Tropicana Field.

Murphy, a 28-year-old catcher who arrived in a March 29 trade with the San Francisco Giants, hit a three-run homer in the first inning to open the scoring, then added a solo HR leading off the fifth for a 9-1 advantage.

Gonzales (13-10) matched his career high for wins in a season. The left-hander allowed three runs on five hits and two walks, with five strikeouts, over five innings.

First baseman Austin Nola also homered for the M's and drove in three runs on two hits.

Shortstop J.P. Crawford had two hits and an RBI as Seattle outhit the Rays 9-6.

The Mariners climbed to 53-73, while Tampa Bay slipped to 73-53.

The three-game series continues at 4 p.m. Tuesday. As of Monday night, starting pitchers had not been announced.
