Blazers think Rice is nice
Aug. 22-26, 1990
The Trail Blazers name Mike Rice their new radio analyst. The former Duquesne coach had been working for ESPN and SportsChannel America. "I think this guy is going to be great," says Marshall Glickman, the Blazers' vice president of marketing. In a rookie camp audition, Rice outshone three other candidates — retired referee Earl Strom, former coach Jack McKinney and ex-Oregon State/Grant High star Mark Radford. "I'm kind of a character," Rice says. "I get enthusiastic about every game I watch. ... I like to bring a lot of humor. ... It's like I'm sitting at a bar watching a game and talking to the guy next to me."
