BENNETTAug. 29-Sept. 2, 2012

The Portland Timbers announce they have hired "the right guy," according to owner Merritt Paulson to be their coach. Caleb Porter, 37, is expected to arrive in mid-December after finishing the college season with Akron. Paulson calls Porter "a unique talent." Porter will replace John Spencer, who was fired after 1 1/2 seasons.

• The Oregon Ducks breathe a sigh of relief when sophomore quarterback Bryan Bennett says he'll stay instead of transferring in the wake of redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota being named the UO starter.
