Oregon sports history/1970: Prep football kicks off with PIL jamboree at Multnomah Stadium

The expansion Portland Trail Blazers sign 25-year-old guard and former Oregon Ducks star Jim Barnett to a multiyear contract.

• Lanny Wadkins is the new U.S. Amateur champion, having won last weekend at Waverley Country Club.

• In the annual Portland Interscholastic League football jamboree at Multnomah Stadium, defending champion Jefferson edges 1969 runner-up Madison 28-24, Cleveland beats Lincoln 33-18, Benson downs Adams 39-7, Marshall rolls over Jackson 20-0, QB June Jones leads Grant past Wilson 33-8, and Washington tops Franklin 26-19.

Around the state, coach Darrel Davis' Sunset Apollos, Coach Bill Dressel's Central Catholic Rams and Coach Tom Smythe's Lake Oswego Lakers are expected to be among those giving preseason state favorite Jesuit, coached by Jeff Allen, a run for the title.

Sunset opens with a 21-18 victory over Central Catholic, with Davis' double-slot, man-in-motion offense picking apart the Rams, and Jesuit defeats Lake Oswego 27-12.

• Portland State holds its next-to-last football scrimmage, with Charlie Stoudamire rushing 52 yards for a touchdown at Multnomah Stadium. The Vikings will open Sept. 19 at Simon Fraser.

• Twenty-two players are set to report to the Portland Buckaroos' 11th training camp. It starts Sept. 18 in Spokane, Wash. The Buckaroos will return 15 players from their 1970 Western Hockey League Lester Patrick Cup finalist team.
