Trades shake up Thorns' roster
The Thorns announced a series of club-altering moves on Wednesday:
• Portland traded defender Emily Sonnett, the rights to forward Caitlin Foord and picks 7 and 14 in the Jan. 16 draft. Sonnett was the No. 1 pick in the 2016 draft and in four seasons was a mainstay in central defense.
The Thorns have not identified the player they will use this No. 1 pick on, but speculation is it will be Stanford forward Sophia Smith.
• Portland sent Midge Purce and it's first-round pick in the 2021 NWSL draft to Sky Blue FC for midfielder Rocky Rodriguez. Rodriguez, 26, has scored 40 goals in 70 appearances for Costa Rica's national team. She was NWSL rookie of the year in 2016, when she went with the No. 2 pick after Portland took Sonnett, and is considered one of the top midfielders in the league.
In 2015, Rodriguez won the MAC Herman Trophy as the top player in college women's soccer and helped Penn State win the national championship.
• Portland and Brazilian midfielder Andressinha mutually agreed to part, according to a Thorns announcement.
Winterhawks: Portland traded 19-year-old goalie Isaiah DiLaura to Swift Current for a conditional seventh-round bantam pick in the 2021 draft. DiLaura went 4-2-0-2 for the Hawks this season as the backup to Joel Hofer.
With Hofer at the World Juniors, DiLaura went 4-0-0-1.
Dante Giannuzzi, 17, played the other four games in Hofer's absence and won all of them, allowing only eight goals.
