On the site of the former Howe Field, at the corner of 18th Avenue and University Street in Eugene, the University of Oregon unveils its sparkling new softball ballpark — Jane Sanders Stadium.
The $17.2 million facility opens with a game featuring the No. 4-ranked Ducks against Stanford.
Oregon wins 2-0 in the three-game series opener.
All th games are sold out.
Cheridan Hawkins strikes out 14 Cardinals as Oregon improvs to 24-4 overall and 4-0 in the Pac-12.
But the story is Sanders Stadium, with marked improvements in seating and amenities, including locker rooms for the players, 1,438 permanent seats, suites, a $250,000 video board, a clay infield and an artificial turf outfield, oh, and 37 permanent restrooms.
Bob Sanders donated $16 to get the stadium project started. He and his late wife, Jane, graduated from Oregon after meeting there in the 1940s. He was a fullback, she was a cheerleader.
