Darwin Barney returning to Oregon State baseball program as coach; NBA bubble update

The Beaverton native will join Mitch Canham's staff as a volunteer assistant coach and camp coordinator. Barney played shortstop for the Beavers from 2005-2007, when the Beavers made three College World Series trips and won two national titles.

Barney, 34, was supposed to manage the Triple-A Nashville Sounds this season.

He played in 814 major league games with three teams.

He is the Beavers record-holder with 238 career hits and 765 at bats and his 152 runs is second in program history.

• NBA Friday — The teams around Portland in the battle for the No. 8 playoff spot in the Western Conference all won on Friday at the NBA restart in Orlando.

The Blazers, who take on the L.A. Clippers at 10 a.m. Saturday (TNT/NBCSNW).

Portland (32-38) trail eighth-place Memphis (33-37) by one game after the Grizzlies beat Oklahoma City, 121-92, Friday.

San Antonio (30-38) is a game back of Portland after beating Utah, 119-111. New Orleans and Phoenix (both 30-39) are 1 1/2 back of Portland. The Pelicans beat Washington, 118-107, Friday. Sacramento (29-40) lost Friday to Brooklyn and trails Portland by 2 1/2 games.

Haotong Li, at 8-under-par, leads the tournament at Harding Park in San Francisco. He is the first Chinese player to lead a golf major after any round.

ESPN is televising the tournament from 1-7 p.m. Saturday. Sunday's final round begins on ESPN (9 a.m. to noon) and concludes on KOIN/CBS (noon to 6 p.m.).
