Sheffield pitching helps Mariners beat Padres, 4-1
Saturday's win against the San Diego Padres will go down as one of Justus Sheffield's highlights of his rookie season.
The rookie left-hander allowed six hits and one run and Kyle Lewis hit his 11th homer as Seattle beat San Diego 4-1 at Petco Park.
It's a "home" series for the Mariners, who couldn't host the Padres at T-Mobile Park because of air quality. The series finale is 1:10 p.m. Sunday with Justin Dunn pitching for Seattle (23-29) and Dinelson Lamet for the Padres (33-20).
The Padres are chasing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West Division; the Mariners are trying to stay alive for an American League wild-card berth.
Sheffield, who moved to 4-3 with a 3.75, allowed only a Manny Machado RBI single. He struck out five and walked two.
Ty France had an RBI single, and then Luis Torrens doubled home two runs off former Mariner Dan Altavilla in the third inning. Lewis later homered.
