Astros down Mariners, 6-1
Houston gained an all-important game on Seattle in the American League playoff chase with a 6-1 win Tuesday at T-Mobile Park.
With five games to play, the Astros (28-27) lead Seattle (24-31) by four games for second place in the A.L. West Division.
Zack Greinke pitches for Houston and Nick Margevicius for Seattle in the series finale, 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.
Then, the Mariners play division-winning Oakland in four games.
The Los Angeles Angels (25-31) have edged ahead of Seattle in the A.L. West. Cleveland (31-24) secured one wild-card spot (at least); Toronto (28-27) leads the chase for the other A.L. wild-card spot.
Houston starter Framber Valdez and two relievers allowed six Seattle hits, but only one for extra bases (Kyle Seager RBI double). Valdez allowed five hits and one run while striking out eight and walking none.
The Astros scored five runs in the sixth inning. Michael Brantley hit a solo homer and Martin Maldonado provided cushion with a three-run shot.
Kyle Tucker had four hits for Houston.
